As someone with over 2 decades of experience, I would like to give a few tips. You want your dogs to be healthy. Raw meat with bones for every meal may not be financially viable for everyone. Find a butcher near you or a licensed hunter if you live in a region where there’s game nearby. Befriend them and you will have just enough food for your dogs. With the dog food available in the market, there’s no need to chew and they inhale the food like vacuum cleaner. It doesn’t have to be a turkey neck everyday, chicken neck or feet works well. Give them raw eggs with the shell. I saw some people breaking the raw eggs and throwing the shell away. Your dog can use that little bit of calcium, it won’t die. Coconut oil is good for them. Just drizzle some over their food like you do with your pancakes with honey. If you are vegan, give them apples and pumpkins. NOTE that apples need to be without seeds whereas you can ground the pumpkin seeds and give it to your dogs. Give them dried fish, give them blueberries. All these food I mentioned will help your dog keep their teeth healthy, their coat shiny and their bones strong. Just because you love them and cuddle them and give them kisses isn’t going to guarantee a life of health and dignity.
Slow feed bowls aren’t cruel at all. They can save your dog from Bloat which can be LIFE THREATENING. I babysit my friend’s now 5 year old Belgian Malnoise who my Beagle loves and her owner gives me her slow feed bowl when she stays with me.
This was awhile ago, but I tried to get a coworker to use them because she had a Doberman that will quite literally scarf his food down. I warned her of Bloat, but she wouldn’t listen and saw the bowls as cruel. I even said talk to his vet and she would get the same answers. And what do you know a few days after warning her a few times he got Bloat. And why did I say had earlier? Because her dog DIED from complications of Bloat. He was 5 years old. 😢
